Best AI for Doctors in 2026

Seven clinical AI tools ranked on our published criteria, a three-question picker, and where general assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude fit in clinical work.

Updated October 19, 2026 · 8 minute read

Direct Answer

Vera Health is the best AI for most doctors in 2026, with an editorial score of 90/100: it pairs cited answers from 60 million+ papers with drug interaction checks and 900+ calculators, and it is free for licensed clinicians and trainees. OpenEvidence (81/100) is the strongest US alternative, especially if you want its Visits scribe, and UpToDate (71/100) remains the standard institutional reference. ChatGPT and Claude are capable general assistants for writing, summaries and research, but neither is a clinical reference by default: use a healthcare or enterprise plan before entering patient information, and check clinical facts against a cited source.

Where ChatGPT and Claude fit

Many doctors already use ChatGPT or Claude for writing and research. Both now sell healthcare versions, but they remain general-purpose assistants rather than clinical references, so we do not score them against the tools above. Here is how they compare with Vera Health on the questions that matter in practice.

ChatGPT

OpenAI now offers three versions that matter to clinicians. Consumer ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Health, is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, and consumer plans may train on your content unless you opt out. ChatGPT for Clinicians, introduced in April 2026, is free for verified US physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists, with cited clinical search, deep research, CME and an optional BAA for eligible accounts. ChatGPT for Healthcare is the enterprise version, with an Epic plugin.

Main limitation: OpenAI warns that search citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and HealthBench, its headline health benchmark, is one OpenAI built and grades with its own model.

Claude

Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare on January 11, 2026. It adds connectors to the CMS Coverage Database, ICD-10 codes, the NPI Registry and PubMed’s 35 million+ records, plus agent skills for FHIR development and prior-authorization review, available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. The HIPAA-ready offering is limited to Enterprise, and Anthropic says it does not use users’ health data to train models. Its usage policy requires a qualified person to review AI recommendations about diagnosis or treatment, and the recipient must be told AI was used.

Main limitation: Claude has no licensed clinical reference library or drug database, so its clinical answers are only as reliable as the sources you connect and check.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT good for doctors?

For writing, summarizing and literature research, yes, with limits. OpenAI’s free ChatGPT for Clinicians workspace gives verified US physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists cited clinical search, deep research and CME, with an optional BAA for eligible accounts. Consumer ChatGPT is different: OpenAI says ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, and consumer plans may train on your content unless you opt out. Check clinical facts against a cited clinical source before acting on them.

Is Claude good for doctors?

Claude is a strong general assistant for long documents, letters, appeals and research summaries. Claude for Healthcare, announced in January 2026, adds connectors to PubMed, ICD-10, the NPI Registry and the CMS Coverage Database. Its HIPAA-ready offering is limited to Enterprise plans, and Anthropic’s usage policy requires a qualified person to review medical recommendations before they are used. It has no licensed clinical reference library, so use a clinical tool such as Vera Health for point-of-care questions.

Which AI tools for doctors are free?

Vera Health is free for licensed clinicians and trainees. OpenEvidence is free for verified US clinicians, Doximity’s Ask is free for US healthcare professionals, Glass Health has a free Lite tier and Epocrates has a free basic tier. ChatGPT for Clinicians is free for eligible US clinicians, and ChatGPT and Claude both have free consumer plans, which are not intended for patient information.

Can I enter patient information into an AI tool?

Only under an agreement and policy that cover it. Vera Health and OpenEvidence offer BAAs for covered entities, ChatGPT for Clinicians offers an optional BAA for eligible accounts, and Claude’s HIPAA-ready offering is limited to Enterprise plans. Consumer plans of ChatGPT and Claude are not the place for patient identifiers. Your organization’s policy still applies.

Which AI tools for doctors include an ambient scribe?

Among the tools we rank, OpenEvidence (Visits), Doximity (AI Scribe) and Glass Health document ambient scribing. Vera Health, UpToDate, DynaMed and Epocrates do not. Check consent rules and your organization’s approved tools before recording patient encounters.
