Our editorial team tested each sleep tracking app for a minimum of four weeks of nightly use, evaluating five core dimensions: tracking accuracy (how well sleep stage estimates align with subjective sleep quality and, where possible, clinical polysomnography data), smart alarm effectiveness (whether the intelligent wake feature produces noticeably less groggy mornings), insight quality (how actionable the sleep analysis and trend data are for actually improving sleep), ease of use (setup friction, automatic tracking, and daily interaction requirements), and value for price (free tier capabilities and premium pricing justification).
We weighted tracking accuracy and insight quality more heavily because raw data without actionable interpretation has limited value for improving sleep. Apps were tested on multiple devices and compared against each other on the same nights where possible. Phone-based and wearable-based trackers were evaluated within their respective categories, as wearable sensors have inherent accuracy advantages for heart rate and movement detection.
